Shredded wheat
Shredded wheat is a breakfast cereal made from whole wheat that comes in three sizes: bite-sized, miniature, and frosted varieties. It was first made in the United States in 1893, and production in the United Kingdom began in 1926.
United States and Canada
In 1890, Henry Perky developed a method of processing wheat into strips that were formed into pillow-like biscuits, and in 1895, he received United States Patent Number 548,086, dated 15 October 1895. Shredded wheat biscuits proved more popular than the machines, so he opened bakeries.
History
The former Shredded wheat factory in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, first opened in 1926, and the tall concrete cereal silos that are part of the factory are a local landmark. The first 18 storage units were completed in 1926, with another 27 built in 1938.
Advertising
Shredded Wheat has a special place in British popular culture thanks to a long-running television advertising campaign that included phrases like “I bet you can’t eat three” and even a black hole that exploded when the third biscuit was sucked into it.
Trademark of the term “Shredded Wheat”
Kellogg’s Shredded Wheat was the result of a legal battle with National Biscuit Company, in which the Supreme Court ruled that shredded wheat was generic and not trademarkable, and the right to use the name “shredded wheat” to describe the product, as well as its patent, passed into the public domain.
