Grain (unit)
A grain is an obsolete unit of mass measurement that is equal to exactly 64.79891 milligrams in the troy weight, avoirdupois, and Apothecaries’ systems. It is nominally based on the mass of a single ideal seed of a cereal. The troy grain (symbol: gr) is 64.79891 milligrams in the International System of Units. 1 gram is approximately 15.432360grains.
History
Ancient traders used grain weights to define units of mass for wheat and barley grains; 1 carat (the mass of a carob seed) was equivalent to the weight of 4 wheat grains or 3 barleycorns. The Tower pound, which was abolished in 1527, consisted of 12 ounces like the troy pound but 1-16 grains lighter, and the avoirdupois pound was defined in prototype as 6992 to 7004 grains.
